A Community Effort to Protect Our Environment
Armed with gloves, bags, and big smiles, local students and volunteers joined forces for another successful Kelly in the Wild beach clean-up. The event took place on the sandbank and island in the Walvis Bay Lagoon, a site recognized internationally as a Ramsar wetland. This initiative resulted in the removal of an impressive 80 bags of garbage from the shoreline and shallow waters.
Young Leaders Making a Difference
The stars of the day were Hafeni Shipaxu, Alejandro January, and Lucas Nakanyala from Laerskool Walvis Bay. These young heroes collected the most rubbish, demonstrating true environmental leadership. Their efforts set a shining example for their peers. The clean-up was not just about removing trash; it was about protecting marine life and the diverse bird species that rely on the lagoon's fragile ecosystem. By preventing plastics and other waste from entering the ocean, the volunteers are helping safeguard everything from playful dolphins to the iconic flamingos.
The Impact of Community Involvement
Organiser Kelly Beukes, from Kelly's Wild Adventures, praised the teamwork, stating, “The children had an incredible time, and we made a real difference. Every bag of rubbish removed means a safer home for the wildlife we all love.” This community-driven event was made possible thanks to the generous support of sponsors: Walvis Bay Yacht Club, Suzuki Marine, Walvis Bay Salt, Pro Direct Real Estates, Timeware, Skeleton Coast Launching, Walvis Bay Sailing School, Amazing Five Tours, Fancy Flamingo Gifts, Photo Ventures, and Walvis Bay Kite Centre.
The Importance of Clean Beaches
Clean beaches are vital for both the environment and the community. They provide a safe habitat for wildlife and a beautiful space for people to enjoy. Regular clean-up events like this one help raise awareness about the impact of waste on our oceans and encourage more people to take action.
How You Can Get Involved
If you want to make a difference, consider participating in local clean-up events. You can also organize your own clean-up with friends and family. Every small effort counts and contributes to a larger goal of protecting our planet.
Conclusion
The recent beach clean-up at Walvis Bay Lagoon highlights the power of community action and the importance of environmental stewardship. With young leaders like Hafeni, Alejandro, and Lucas at the forefront, there is hope for a cleaner, healthier future for our oceans.
